Massage and bodywork offer a range of benefits for both the body and mind. One significant advantage is relaxation, as these therapies help reduce muscle tension and induce a sense of calm, effectively alleviating stress and anxiety. Massage provides pain relief, making it beneficial for individuals dealing with muscle injuries or chronic conditions. The stimulation of blood flow during massage contributes to improved circulation, leading to better oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues. Regular sessions can enhance flexibility and increase the range of motion in joints, promoting overall mobility. The stress-reducing effects of massage are accompanied by improvements in sleep quality, as the relaxation induced by the therapy can positively impact sleep patterns. Additionally, massage supports the immune system by promoting the activity of natural killer cells.
The massage therapist will ask preliminary questions to determine your overall health and your health and wellness goals. The therapist will consider information about your physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress levels, medications and any areas of physical pain that could affect your massage therapy outcome. This information will help the therapist structure the session to achieve your health and wellness goals.
Before your massage, you’ll be asked to remove clothing to your level of comfort. The massage therapist will leave the room while you undress. Take off only as much as you are comfortable removing. Lie on the massage table, underneath the provided sheet or towel, which will cover your body except for the part being massaged.
Music might be played. If you find music distracting, tell your massage therapist. The same goes for talking during your session. Your massage therapist will check on pressure and comfort throughout your appointment. If you're uncomfortable at any time, tell your massage therapist. The massage table is padded and may have extra attachments or cushions, such as a face cradle, which allows you to lie face down without turning your head or neck.
Your therapist will often use oil or lotion. If you're allergic to oils or lotions, tell your massage therapist beforehand. Depending on your needs, your therapist will massage either the full body (except private areas) or only specific areas that need attention, such as especially tight muscles.
Table massage usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. After your massage, the therapist will allow you to slowly get up and get dressed in privacy. Tips are appreciated to recognize outstanding service, but not required.
Reiki is a holistic approach to healing that can provide significant benefits for both mind and body. The human body is composed of and contains massive amounts of energy, but imbalances in our internal energy system can lead to physical, mental, and emotional health problems over time. Energy healing works to promote balance and harmony by channeling universal energy into the areas where there is an imbalance. This has been known to have therapeutic effects by stimulating a parasympathetic nervous system response, also known as our "rest and digest" mode. While in this mode, our body's own natural self-healing processes are stimulated, and our energetic body can safely regulate. Reiki a gentle and non-invasive therapy that can be used to support the healing of a wide range of conditions. It can be particularly helpful for those who have experienced trauma, or who are dealing with chronic pain disorders. If you are looking for an alternative approach to healing, Reiki may be worth considering.
A typical session lasts for one hour (initial session is one and a half hours) and begins with you lying down on a massage table fully clothed, minus shoes and glasses. Relaxing music is available if you choose but is not required. We make every effort to be sure that each client feels safe and comfortable.
Before the session begins, you can discuss any of your thoughts or concerns. You can also choose to talk or ask questions during your session or relax and remain silent, meditate, or nap. The practitioner will work above your body or lightly place their hands on various parts of your body. If you do not wish to be touched, or feel uncomfortable with touch at any point, please let your practitioner know immediately.
Your practitioner will feel for places where energy is stagnant or where energy is deficient. Please let them know if there is a specific area, or areas, that you would like addressed.
There are times when you may feel heat, cold or a tingling sensation from the practitioner’s hands indicating that there is some type of block or stagnation of energy in a particular area. The practitioner may relay impressions of what he/she is feeling with their hands to you during the session, but typically will wait until the end to go over any questions or feelings (both physical and emotional) that come up.
Most people feel very relaxed as sessions allow for the release of physical, emotional, and spiritual pain or blockages. This allows the individual to begin making the necessary changes and shifts in awareness towards a more positive life experience. We find that energy medicine has a cumulative effect and so when you treat yourself to regular sessions, better health and well-being are natural outcomes.
At the end, you and your practitioner can check in about anything that came up for you during the session.
Meditation is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to promote health and inner peace. The goal of meditation is dependent on the intention of the practitioner, but overall, it allows us to achieve a state of calm, invites clarity of mind, and allows for healthy emotional processing. Meditation has many functional benefits, including reduced stress/anxiety, improved sleep, and increased energy. This practice can also be beneficial for physical health, as it can help to lower blood pressure, improve circulation, and reduce global tension throughout the body. Despite its many benefits, meditation is often misunderstood. Some people believe that meditation is only for those who are religious or spiritual, but this is not the case. Meditation is a powerful practice that builds awareness, grants you internal safety, and leads to improved emotional regulation, mental health, and purposefulness.
Contrary to popular belief, meditation does not always involve clearing the mind. Focused attention meditation allows for you to focus on a specific sensation, feeling, or sound to slow down the racing mind, improving attention/concentration and reducing stress/anxiety.
In opposition to focused-attention, open-awareness meditation allows you to fully absorb your surroundings, fully experience your internal state, or a combination of both. This creates a shift in presence that allows us to transition from the vicious cycle of "just doing" to "just being".
Instead of having a million thoughts flying through our heads at the same time, mantra meditation allows us to focus on a single thought. The repetition of this thought promotes instills positive affirmations, alleviates negative emotional states, and produces a sense of calm within.
Especially helpful for those with anxiety-based tension or chronic pain, body scan meditation allows you to fully experience the sensations coming from differing parts of your body. Recognizing where you hold stress can be a stepping stone to addressing chronic physical issues, especially when this is leading to a decline in mental health.
This form of eye open meditation involves fixating the gaze on a single point, typically the flame of a candle. Trataka has been known to strengthen the muscles of the eyes, reduce headaches/migraines, and subdue repressed anger/aggression.
For those with more experience in meditation, also known as yogic sleep, Yoga Nidra can have incredible benefits such as: changing thought patterns, improving cognitive function and memory, as well as boosting self esteem/confidence. Over time, this practice leads to what is referred to as "waking mindfulness", or accepting what is happening around us without creating judgements or repressions.
Breathwork, also known as mindful breathing, is a powerful tool that can be used to reduce stress, promote peace, and connect with the body. Breathwork training involves the use of various breathing techniques which improve the quality of the breath, reduce blood pressure, decompress the nervous system integration, and alleviate tension throughout the body. One of the most popular types of breathwork is pranayama, which is a form of yogic breathing that is focused on moving prana, or life energy. Pranayama can be used to improve lung capacity/quality of breath, develop a higher awareness of self, and promote bliss and peace within us. Some breathing techniques also stimulate somatic release, which is the process of releasing stored trauma in the body and nervous system. This practice is an extremely powerful method for promoting wellness within your life, requiring nothing but your time and attention.
